County Overview & Information

Westchester County, situated in the state of New York, holds the rank of the seventh most populous county in the state and is the most densely populated north of New York City.

As per the 2020 United States Census, the county’s population reached a record high of 1,004,456, marking an increase of 55,344 from the 949,113 reported in 2010.

Encompassing an area of 450 square miles in the Hudson Valley region, Westchester comprises six cities, 19 towns, and 23 villages. Established in 1683, the county derived its name from the city of Chester, England.

The county seat is the city of White Plains, while the city of Yonkers stands as the most populous municipality in the county, housing 211,569 residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

Situated as one of the centrally located counties in the New York metropolitan area, Westchester County shares borders with New York City, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties, Putnam County to the north, Fairfield County in Connecticut to the east, and Rockland County and Bergen County in New Jersey across the Hudson River to the west.

Westchester gained distinction as the world’s first suburban area of its magnitude, primarily attributed to the upper-middle-class development of entire communities in the late 19th century, followed by rapid population growth.

The county boasts extensive road and mass transit connections to New York City and serves as the headquarters for major multinational corporations such as IBM, Mastercard, PepsiCo, and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.

Westchester County’s high school students frequently excel as winners in the International Science and Engineering Fair and other STEM-based academic competitions.
