About the Fairfield Probate Court

The General Court, known as the Legislature at the time, established the Fairfield Probate Court, located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, in 1666, making it one of the oldest courts in the United States.

  • Probating wills and the administration of estates
  • Overseeing testamentary and living trusts
  • Determining title to real and personal property
  • Appointing guardians for the developmentally disabled
  • Appointing conservators for incapable individuals
  • Appointing guardians for minors
  • Terminating parental rights
  • Granting adoptions
  • Emancipating minors
  • Appointing guardians of the estate of minors
  • Awarding custody of the remains of a deceased person
  • Granting name changes
